How to reverse a bank transfer in Nigeria

A mistaken transfer is urgent, but reversal is not automatic. Act quickly, report to your bank, and keep written evidence.

Quick answer

Contact your bank immediately with the transaction reference, recipient details, amount, and time. Ask the bank to initiate a trace or recall. If fraud is suspected, also report through fraud channels and keep your complaint ticket.

Steps to take

  1. Do not contact random “recovery agents.”
  2. Call or visit your bank as soon as possible.
  3. Submit transaction proof and recipient details.
  4. Ask for a complaint/ticket number.
  5. Follow up in writing.
  6. Escalate to CBN if your bank fails to handle the complaint after the allowed period.

Can the bank force reversal?

Not every transfer can be instantly reversed, especially if the recipient has withdrawn the money or disputes the claim. Banks may need to contact the receiving bank, restrict suspicious funds, or request more documentation.
